Organ are often recognized as the most impressive and complex music instrument. Thanks to MIDI interfaces and realistic sound databanks, organ simulator softwares (JOrgan, Hauptwerk) are able to play numerous of organs around the world. The objectives of the project are multiple:

- To keep the pipe organ as it is (no modification concerning mechanics and hydraulics);
- To develop a complete electronic circuit able to read and to transmit into MIDI protocol the status of keyboards, stops in addition to the pedalboard;
- To use the existing organ in order to play other organs by using software databanks.
The challenges concern mainly the reading time, the type and the price of key's sensors.

Dear communtiy,
It's never too late to start a project announced three months ago! As annouced previously, one of the main challenges is to find an easy way to detect the motion without removing the rods which activate the organ hydraulics (see waveboard on Figure 1). The objective is to place flags fixed along the rod in order to cut light flux of optosensors. We have tested a lot of manners to place flags in order to detect the 0.5cm vertical motion of rods. The best manner found until now is to place pieces of copper foil tape as illustrated in the Figure 2. This option gives the opportunity to fix flexible flag which the height can be easily adapted with simple scissors. Maybe, anyone has a better idea of other types of flags?

I'm using already many years an existing low cost solution bwing designed and deliverd by jordan petkov in Bulgaria. The name of his shop is midiboutique. contact info:

With this MIDI interface I'm feeding in parallel with the excisting organ keyboard, thus on the connection panel, the solenoids of the valves.
We have to 64 keyboards and 32 keys pedal and 32 stops. We are downloading fuga's of Bach, with Sonar home studio we adding the stops on channel 4. And alltogether it workd fine.
In parallel we also sniffing the keys with an additional MIDI interface board and storing the played music on the PC. Thus it's already there. But a very good thing will be an addition I'm dreaming of. Developping a WEB-based Midi interface so people can log-in from remote, with a remote midi keyboard into te organ. And a feed-back via the sound channel. Thus people can play, from home, a real organ. While the church is closed. In that way we can use the remaing 98% of non-use time of an avarage organ. A pay-pal interface making a cash-flow for preserving these historical instruments. Family can log-in and listen to uncles John organ music!! Crazy idea, NO, but no time to realize that.
